The nation has seen a surge of nationalist supremacist and hate groups now numbering over a 1,000 nationwide. The workplace must take clear and reasoned steps to prevent and mitigate racism and intolerance from entering the work environment. Security professionals play the key and pivotal role in insuring a just, fair, safe and therapeutic work environment. This class will teach security professionals key pivotal steps they can take and promote that will both maintain a diverse work culture and prevent the forces of intolerance from obtaining any kind of company foothold.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion, participants will be able to:
- Attendees will learn about the scope and growth of nationalist movements in the US.
- Attendees will learn how to identify the warning signs of intolerance in the workplace.
- Attendees will learn the importance of early and pro-active intervention when situations arise.

Jim Sawyer has been a crime prevention and personal safety presenter for more than 40 years. He is a certified instructor in nonviolent crisis intervention and a member and presenter with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Sawyer is president and a past president of the WA State Crime Prevention Association and is a member of ASIS International. Sawyer instructs on-going classes for Seattle Children’s Hospital staff on workplace violence and personal safety, and began an in-house self defense course for women employees. Sawyer has also taught classes regionally for hospitals, schools, seminars, and businesses on verbal de-escalation. Sawyer has a Bachelor's degree in society in justice, won a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2010 from Washington State Crime Prevention Association, and was recognized as in 2018 as one of the top seventeen security professionals by Security magazine.
