The healthcare profession has become the most dangerous environment with regard to workplace violence. According to 2014 data provided by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, workers in the healthcare sector experience workplace violence related injuries at an estimated incidence rate of 8.2 per 10,000 full time workers. That is more than four times higher than the rate of 1.7 per 10,000 workers in the private sector. Community Based Security focused on reducing both risk and anxiety through Building Trust, Scenario Based Training and Technology, creates an environment where our healthcare community focuses on prevention, intervention and response to workplace violence. The presentation also focuses on first of its kind research underway on these security tactics.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion, participants will be able to:  

1.  How to implement community policing-based security models focused on trust, transparency and training. These include engaging stakeholders using nontraditional methods, applying CPTED principles and changing traditional incentive models to reshape how security officers approach security.  
2. How to effectively implement security strategies such as firearms programs, Taser Programs and Security K-9 Programs. Topics such as policy development, selection and training along with clinical engagement prior to implementation.  
3. How to create law enforcement-based training scenarios designed for the health care environment clinical environment. Role playing, simulation, use of proper venues, training safety, along with effective use of force simulators will all be covered.

Brian currently serves as the Deputy Director of DPSS for the University of Michigan and Director of Security for the University of Michigan Health System, Michigan Medicine. Brian is also a sworn police officer for the University. He manages over 200 public safety staff members for a system that has 30,000 employees that see over 2.2 Million patients a year.

Brian retired as the Assistant Chief of the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety in Kalamazoo, Michigan after 23 years. He is the recipient of the Kalamazoo Public Safety Medal of Valor and Kalamazoo Public Safety Lifesaving award.

Brian holds a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice and a Master’s degree in Public Administration. He is a graduate of the FBI National Academy, along with being a Board-Certified Protection Professional (CPP) Board-Certified Healthcare Protection Administrator (CHPA) and Board-Certified Threat Manager (CTM).
