The discussion begins with consideration of the human component and how human connection is complex, challenging, frustrating and exhilarating. A focus on the art of security cultures as the foundation of a successful security program and career. An examination of the personal characteristics a security professional needs to build a great security culture and become a trusted and value business partner. Learn to position yourself to be recognized by business leaders as critical to employee physical security and psychologically safety, and get seat at the proverbial leadership table.
The conversation continues regarding the successful deployment of an ESRM program, and how one must embrace a broader set of tools and concepts of change management. Insights are provided as to how to build a strong security culture, leverage data and technology, manage stakeholder communication, and the importance of continuous improvement.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion, participants will be able to:
- Trust as the foundation to all success. Obtaining high levels of trust from business leaders and all employees impacts all aspects of culture development.
- Security culture journey is non-linear and not a science.
- Three levels of leadership and "Tone at the Top". Understanding business leader’s opinions of the security function and working towards advocacy.
- Checking your ego and first impressions. Empathy, compassion, and vulnerability are your super-powers.
- Communication skills. Quality verbal communication and the impressions you make – speak to people, not at people. The art of precise and concise communication.
- Understand the role of the security leader in the ESRM process. Including the critical responsibilities of the security leader: setting the strategic direction, overseeing implementation, and facilitating the overall process.
- Strategies for building a strong security culture. How to communicate the importance of physical security and promote a security-conscious mindset among employees.
- Continuously improve your program. The importance of continuous improvement and how you can lead this effort through regular review, measurement, and reporting on the effectiveness of your program.

Jon has been in the security industry nearly 20 years in various capacities. He began as a Security Officer at a university campus, before joining a contract security company as an account manager. Jon moved into a role as a Site Security Manager in the aerospace and defense industry and developed through various roles of greater responsibility, until wrapping up his End User tenure leading the Global Security and Trade Compliance organization.
Transitioning into the service provider side of the business in 2018, Jon was the A&E Consultant Program Manager for LenelS2 before moving into consulting as the Director of Enterprise Solutions for Guidepost Solutions. In 2021, he moved to Group337 as Vice President - Strategy Consulting, and is now Sr. Product Manager at HiveWatch.
A regular speaker at industry events, Jon has presented at GSX, AcceleRISE, and various seminars/webinars.
Jon has a Bachelor's in Criminal Justice from the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, MN, and a Master's in Business Administration from Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts. He has also acquired the Certified Protection Professional (CPP) and Physical Security Professional (PSP) certifications.

John Rodriguez is the founder of Empathic Security Cultures LLC based in Austin, TX.
John brings 40+ years of pure corporate security experience working for major corporations including General Motors, Kimberly-Clark, Levi Strauss & Co., and Cardinal Health. He previously was the CSO for Temple-Inland in Austin, TX. He also owned a consulting firm for 10 years with over 100 Fortune 500® clients. John’s career started as a third shift proprietary security officer with General Motors progressing to positions of higher responsibility up to CSO.
While with Kimberly-Clark Corporation, security director for Latin American operations, the company was ranked #1 of 1,900 companies from 2009-2011 by the Great Place to Work Institute®John’s innovative security strategies were recognized by senior leadership as critical contributions to those years of #1 rankings. Business sales ranked 1st or 2nd place in every country of operation.
John’s is a security generalist with passion for security culture development, mentoring, and mental health in the workplace to reduce workplace violence, bullying, and hostile environment risks. He also works with business leader and employees to break through the mental health stigma barrier to work towards self-care.
He holds a Master’s of Liberal Arts, Texas Christian University and a Bachelor’s in Criminal Justice, North Texas State University. He completed the Chief Security Officer Executive Development Program, The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania. He held the ASIS CPP certification for 19 years and the ACFE CFE designation for 16 years. He has lectured numerous times at ASIS, ISMA and other security associations.
He has authored articles including: How to Build a Best-in-Class Security Culturefor ASIS International – this was 1 of the 12 most read articles in 2022.
John is a Certified Family Support Group Facilitator with the National Alliance on Mental Health and gives back to the community by leading support group discussions as well as training at law enforcement academies as part of their Crisis Intervention Team curriculum in the Greater Austin, TX area.
